Where fun & passion meet

International cycling event with a ‘wow!’ effect

Where fun & passion meet

From 19 through 21 October, MECC Maastricht will be holding the Euro Cycling XP event as the ultimate way to close the cycling, triathlon and MTB season, and kick off the winter ATB and cyclo-cross season. It will be an event where cyclists can get inspired, the community can meet up, and knowledge and experience can be shared.

Euro Cycling XP is a high-end interactive cycling event where the focus is on cycling, cyclo-cross, mountain biking, triathlons and more...actually, any cycling sport you can participate in at the competition level. ‘High-end’ because only the crème de la crème will be competing, and ‘interactive’ because the experience will be the central theme. Euro Cycling XP is an international cycling event where major brands will present their products and services, and where fans, amateurs and pros can share their knowledge on materials, training, technology, aerodynamics, strategy, nutrition, mindset and coaching. We will be offering features such as a cyclists’ café with panel discussions, a bike-fitting lab, test tracks, and clinics on real outdoor tracks, plus even a vintage section where visitors can enjoy a visual display of the evolution of bicycles from 1900 to the present.

Euro Cycling XP’s goal is to stimulate cycling in Europe, to make a positive contribution to the development of cycling talent, and to inspire young people to participate in cycling sports.

Euro Cycling XP: where racing, MTB, cross, gravel, triathlon & time trials meet

Ride with the pro’s

Last but not least, you will meet cycling heroes and find out what it takes to reach the top, literally and figuratively. Major names from different teams will challenge you in a cycling trainer contest, or during one of the many clinics. Learn from their drive, discipline and dedication, and push your own limits. During Euro Cycling XP, we will be organising various tours that depart from the MECC Maastricht venue, for both beginners and experienced cyclists.

Cross-border cycling

Thanks in part to the local landscape and famous classic events, the Euregion is one of the world’s leading areas for cycling. It is the region where cycling has evolved to become a sport with international appeal. Limburg has played a prominent role in the history of the cycling world championships, events which have been held no fewer than six times in this area (1938, 1948, 1979, 1998, 1967 and 2012). Additionally, the Amstel Gold Race was held here for the first time in 1966. This classic event has become a permanent fixture on the international cycling calendar. True leg-killing climbs like the famous Cauberg and the infamous Keutenberg are the literal ‘high points’ in the cycling landscape.

The world-famous Ardennes ‘trifecta’ of major cycling events are also held each year in the Euregion, starting with the Amstel Gold Race, followed by the Walloon Arrow with its finish at the Wall of Huy and maximum grades of 19%, and ending with the oldest of all classic cycling races, the Liège-Bastogne-Liège event.

Finally, this year the Tour de France will start in Düsseldorf and finish in Liège, and the 2018 World Cyclo-Cross Championships will be held in the Limburg city of Valkenburg.

UCI Bike-City label

In October 2016, the prestigious UCI Bike-City label was awarded to Valkenburg aan de Geul and the Province of Limburg. The UCI Bike-City label is awarded in recognition of the broad and sustainable developments in cycling in the region and the province. This international label will place the region even more prominently on the ‘cycling map’. Euro Cycling XP’s goal is to stimulate cycling in Europe, to make a positive contribution to the development of cycling talent, and to get young people enthusiastic about participating in sports, particularly those involving bicycles.

The difference between winning and losing and between coming in first or second place can be incredibly small in top-class sports. Continuous improvement and innovation demands incredible drive on the part of athletes and coaches alike. In recent decades, innovations in cycling have followed one another in rapid succession. This has led to safe cycling clothing, aerodynamic helmets, lightweight bicycles, balanced sports nutrition and more. Many of these sports innovations originated in the border region of the Dutch province of Limburg and its neighbour, Belgium, and surprisingly enough, are not coming solely from large multinationals, but also from the corner shop, as it were. These and other important cycling innovations will be addressed in detail during Euro Cycling XP.
